Safety Tips
Look for yellow license plates and a roof light marked "TAXI", unlicensed cars usually have white plates and no meter.
Insist the driver starts the meter. If he claims it's broken, negotiate the fare before moving, common excuse in Bishkek.
Use Yandex Go or Namba Taxi, the two apps locals rely on. They display driver and car details upfront.
For night or solo rides, share your trip status from Yandex Go or Namba Taxi with a friend, both apps have this built-in feature.
Common Scams to Avoid
Drivers at Manas International Airport refusing to use the meter and quoting inflated flat rates, often double the metered fare. Insist on the meter before you get in. If they refuse, walk to the official taxi desk inside the terminal or order via a ride-hailing app.
Taxis near Ala-Too Square or Osh Bazaar switching the meter to the night or out-of-town tariff during daytime trips. Watch the meter display. If you see 'Ночь' or 'Город+' when it should be standard, ask the driver to reset it or end the ride and pay only the legitimate fare.
Some older cars have meters that appear to tick up unusually fast, a practice locals call 'speedy counters'. If the fare jumps every few seconds, note the taxi's license plate and registration number, pay only what the standard rate should be, and report the incident to the tourist police hotline.
