Bishkek sits at about 2,600 feet elevation in the Chui Valley, which gives it a continental climate with proper seasons—cold winters, hot summers, and pleasant shoulder periods in between. You'll notice the temperature swings are pretty dramatic, with January lows dipping to around -7°C (19°F) and July highs reaching 32°C (90°F). The city gets most of its precipitation in spring, particularly March through May, while summer months from July through September are quite dry. The surrounding Tian Shan mountains create a rain shadow effect that keeps things relatively arid year-round, though you'll still want to pack for those spring showers. What's interesting about Bishkek's climate is how quickly the seasons transition. Spring arrives suddenly after the cold winter, and by May you're already seeing temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius. Summers are hot and dry—the kind of heat that's actually quite pleasant because the humidity stays reasonable and evenings cool down nicely. Autumn is brief but lovely, with comfortable temperatures through September before things start dropping off in October. Winters are genuinely cold with regular snow, though the city tends to get plenty of sunny days even in the coldest months.

Bishkek is quite walkable but sidewalks can be uneven, and you'll likely do a fair amount of exploring on foot.
Light daypack
Essential for day trips to the mountains or markets, and useful for carrying layers as temperatures shift.
Basic first aid and medications
Pharmacies are available but having your own supplies is reassuring, especially if heading to more remote areas.
Cash in local currency
While cards work in the city, many smaller shops, markets, and rural areas are still cash-based.
